About the University
Taurida University is a state school of higher education, which enjoys the 4-th accreditation level. It consists of the following 18 faculties, which provide training of students in 45 specialities:
The University also has the Faculty of Advanced Studies, which provides second higher education in 12 specialities, and the Faculty for Foreign Students. All University sections and divisions offer resident (full day) and correspondence types of studies, while Teaching Consulting Centers provide only correspondence and distance types of studies. The total number of students is over 17.000 people. The University employs about 1314 lecturers, including 133 Doctors of Science and professors, 569 Candidates of Sciences, associate professors, Senior lecturers and Lecturers. Among them 1 Hero of Ukraine, 4 State prize Laureates, 24 people have been awarded the title of Honoured Workers of Science and Education of Ukraine and 53 people enjoy the title of Honoured Workers of Science and Education of Crimea. The training of specialists of the highest qualification is provided through the postgraduate training. More than 250 postgraduate students study now in more than 50 specialities. Some 40-45 Candidate and 8-10 Doctoral Degrees are defended each year. The University furnishes excellent environment for academic work and studies. Faculty members and students enjoy access to the academic library with a large stock of literature, specialized reading halls, equipped with computers. All Faculties have their own training laboratories. The University has its own Astronomical Observatory, Zoological Museum and Botanical Garden. Modern technologies are used to facilitate the training process. The University computer network links together about 1000 workstations, most of them have Internet access. Multimedia kits, digital services, CDs, educational and test courses are widely used. Application of advanced technologies, such as fiber-optic communications and computer telephony, etc., is gaining greater potential. Faculty members prepare student textbooks, manuals and various methodological materials. Information and publishing unit of the University produces 40-50 publications annually. Furthermore, the University regularly publishes its own periodicals, including the following: TNU Academic Records, The Culture of the Black Sea Nations, Pontida, The Crimean Archive, The Issues of the Russian Literature, Dynamic Systems, Taurida Herald of Mathematics and Information science, etc. Practical studies and field training are arranged for University students at research institutes, leading industrial enterprises, various organizations, institutions and schools. The University has its own practice facility for students of biology and geography in the mountain area of Crimea, covered with forests. Research in the University is conducted in the areas, determined by the established scientific schools and trends. A special attention is focused on such important topics as human health, environmental protection, resource-saving technologies, new substances and materials, advanced information systems, depth psychology, etc. Annually more than 60 international conferences are held at the University. They promote further development and world fame of University scientific schools. Many of the conferences became traditional: the Crimean Autumn Mathematics School CRAMS, Functional materials ICFM, Space Ecology and Biosphere, the Academic School on Deformation and Destruction of Materials with Defects and Dynamic Developments in Rocks and Mine Working, etc. Every year the University scholars publish more than 2500 academic works, including some 55 monographs, 1916 scientific articles, more than 110 of which are published in foreign journals. The scientific research facilities of the University include both large sections and smaller units and laboratories at the Faculty Departments. Among them are: Scientific-Research Centre "Technologies of Sustainable Development"; Biotechnological Centre; Training-Scientific Laboratory of Software for Computer Systems; Regional Monitoring Information-Analytical Centre of Autonomous Republic of Crimea Environment; Ukrainian Institute of Speleology and Karstology of NASU and MESU under TNU; UNESCO Chair "Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development"; Interdepartmental Scientific-Research Centre of Cognitive and Applied Linguistics of MESU and NASU; Crimean Scientific-Methodological Center for Education Management of APS (Academy of Pedagogical Sciences) of Ukraine and TNU; Scientific Departments and Laboratories Complex; Juridical Laboratory; Center of Simultaneous Translation; Botanical Garden; Zoological Museum; Scientific Library; Department of Functional Materials and Fiber Optics; Centre of Correction of Human Functional State was established; Center for Linguistic Expertise. More than 6.5 thousand students are engaged in research. They publish over 500 academic articles annually, take part in more than 100 academic conferences, including 50 international ones. Young scientists, postgraduates and other students of the University take active part in contests for personal scholarships. In 2007 4 postgraduate students and 2 students won scholarships from the President of Ukraine, 2 young scientists and 1 student - obtained scholarships from the Cabinet of Ministers, 68 students and postgraduate students receive scholarships established in the memory of world known scholars, whose work was linked with Taurida University. The University scholars maintain close relations with 26 institutes of the National Academy of Sciences and Branch Academies of Science of Ukraine: Institute of Geological Sciences, Institute of World Economics and International Relations, Crimean Astrophysical Observatory, Karadag Natural Preserve, Institute of Linguistics Institute of Philosophy, etc. At present the University has the agreements on international cooperation with 40 universities of Germany, Greece, France, Switzerland, Great Britain, USA, Russia, Byelorus. Among them are: Saloniki and Athens Universities (Greece), Lublin and Opolsky Universities (Poland), Willammette University (USA), Nice and Perpignan Universities (France), Genoa and Rome Universities (Italy), the University of Duisburg-Essen and Ruprecht-Karls University, Manheim University of Applied Sciences (Germany). A fresh impact has been given to long-standing contacts with T.G. Shevchenko Kiev National University, M.V. Lomono-sov Moscow State University and Belgorod and Byelorus State Universities. Annually more than 100 researchers and students of the University go on scientific and educational trips and visits abroad. The University hosts approximately the same number of scientific and educational institutions representatives. The University is engaged in student exchange with other universities and hosts joint conferences and seminars/workshops. Students from China, Turkey, Russia, Algeria, Palestine, Jordan, Serbia and other countries study at Taurida University. On the programmes Tempus and Tacis large-scale projects are fulfilled: "Economics of Environment", "Development of Education in Ecologically Safe Energy Sphere", "Support of Management Training in Crimea", "Development of Media Skills", etc. On the competitive basis international programme INTAS grants on the preservation of the environment, creation of HIV modeling medications, and also in the sphere of mathematics analysis were won by the University. The Southern Network Centre on Studying of European Cultures (members of which are the Universities of Germany, Italy, Austria and Russia) is operating on the basis of the University. Not once the University scientists made researches by request of Crimean Integration and Development Programme (CIDP UN), connected with analysis and monitoring of socio-economic processes in Crimea. University students combine their intensive studies with excellent leisure opportunities. Six modern dormitories, sport centers, gymnasiums and sport grounds, various amateur clubs and hobby groups are at their full service. The symphonic music concerts in Botanical Garden of the University have become traditional and are taken fancy by everybody. The University has its own health rehabilitation facility Prometheus, situated in Alushta, on the Southern Coast of Crimea. Modern public catering system is operating in the University: a canteen, various cafes and lunchrooms. An innovation Centre of Correction of Human Functional State and Medical Service Centre are functioning in the dormitory. The University life is covered in Taurida University, a newspaper, published in large editions, and also The Student Style, a student self-governed newspaper. |
