History

The history of the Faculty of Crimean-Tartar and Oriental Philology begins with opening of Historical-Philological Faculty at Taurida University in the autumn of 1918. In May, 1918 the Yalta board of professors decided to petition for opening of the Faculty of Oriental Languages or Turkish-Tartar branch at Historical-Philological Faculty. However, The Council of Kiev University recognized inconvenient to create such faculty or branch in Crimea as there wasn’t the similar branch in Kiev. But they suggested teaching of history of the Muslim East , the Tartar and Modern Greek languages, Local Archeology and Study of Local Lore.
Despite of political instability in Crimea, the Council of professors of Historical-Philological Faculty of Taurida University at their sessions of May, 2 and 16, 1919 approved the plan of creation of Oriental Branch and decided to organize groups on three specialities: Turk-Tartar, Arminian-Georgian and Arab-Syrian philology. Study of 16 obligatory disciplines was recommended, including the History of Culture, Arts and Religions of the East, Byzantium, the Balkan Slavs, Crimean, Russian and General History, and also Comparative Linguistics, Modern Greek Language, History of Philosophy and other disciplines. It was considered necessary to create 5 new departments at the Oriental Branch: of Arabian, Syrian and Turk-Tartar Philology, Muslim Jurisprudence and Ethnography of the Middle Oriental.
The Oriental Branch opened at the Historical-Philological Faculty in September, 1919, and existed several years, afterwards it was liquidated together with the University in the middle of 1920s.
In connection with transformation of Taurida University (with the establishment of the Soviet power in Crimea), Oriental branch (6 departments) was a part of the Faculty of Social Studies which was reorganized into the Oriental Faculty on March 1st, 1922, without grants for its maintenance from the center. The same decision was accepted on April 6th, 1922 by the board of Narkomat (People’s Commissariat) of education of Russian Federation.
By the end of 1922, the structure of the University had undergone essential changes. The University had only 3 faculties: Physical and Mathematical, Medical, Oriental Faculties, and also Rabfac (Workers’ Faculty). Reforms at the Crimean university proceeded next years, too. In 1924 the Faculty of Oriental Studies together with three another branches became a part of Pedagogical Faculty. On the basis of the Pedagogical Faculty of the University, the Pedagogical institute was organized in September-October of 1925 in Simferopol.
Known professors worked at the Oriental Branch: Bekir Choban-Zade (orientalist-philologist), V.I. Filonenko (the teacher of the Persian language and literature), A.M. Lukyanenko (Russian and Comparative Linguistics), E.V. Petukhov (History of Russian Literature), A.I. Markevich (Study of Local Lore). The teachers of the Crimean-Tartar language and literature before the Great Patriotic War were Abibula Odabash, Asan Islyamov, Alim Fetislyamov (the Head of the Department of Crimean-Tartar Literature), Abdul’amit Batyrmuzaev (the Head of the Department of the Crimean-Tartar Language), Raime Mullina. The Oriental languages, including Arabian and Turkish, taught senior assistants Asan-Sabri Aivazov, Ismail Lyomanov, younger assistant Osman Akchokrakly and others.
The Faculty of Crimean-Tartar Language and Literature was one of 6 faculties in the structure of the Crimean Pedagogical M.V. Frunze Institute, with 135 day-time students and 57 correspondence students in 1938. In 1940/41 educational year the faculties of the Tartar Language and Literature and of the Russian Language and Literature were united in one Faculty of Language and Literature with Tartar and Russian branches. The Dean of the Faculty was the Associate Professor A. Islyamov who was appointed the scientific degree of Candidate of Philological Science in 1937.
Repressions of 1930s caused a significant loss to the staff of the Faculty of the Crimean-Tartar Language and Literature. In 1932 the struggle against "bourgeois nationalism", especially Tartar ones, was unleashed. So-called “bourgeois-nationalist“ groups of Bajmbitov, Alikhanov and others were “disclosed“, that were accused of preparation of overthrow of the Soviet Power by means of intervention. A number of teachers of the Faculty were accused of propagation of bourgeois-nationalist ideas, among them were A.S. Ajvazov, I. Lyomanov and others. In 1930s, academician Bekir Choban-Zade was arrested and then shot on charge of propagation of bourgeois-nationalist ideas.
As the result of such "cleanings", the Faculty of the Crimean-Tartar Language and Literature remained without professors and associate professors.
During Great Patriotic War the branch of the Crimean-Tartar Language and Literature in the Teacher's Institute was closed and only with returning of the Crimean Tartars to Crimea, in 1990, it was again opened at the Philological Faculty of Simferopol M.V.Frunze State University. In 1991-1992 about hundred students together with teachers were transferred from Tashkent Nizami State Pedagogical Institute to the branch of the Tartar Language and Literature of the University.
In 1990 the Department of the Crimean-Tartar Language and Literature was opened at the Philological Faculty which in 1992 was divided into two departments: of the Crimean-Tartar language (the Head – Associate Professor E.S. Akmollaev) and of the Crimean-Tartar Literature (the Head – Associate Professor J. Bekirov).
Since 1994, the Head of the Department of the Crimean-Tartar Language has been Professor A.Memetov; the Department of Crimean-Tartar Literature was headed by Sh. Abduramanova from 1998 to 1999, and since 1999 – by Associate Professor S. Yunusov.
