The Dean of the Faculty

History

This faculty is believed to be officially established in 1934. However, geographic courses were lectured from the very first days of the University. The foundations of the faculty were laid by such distinguished scholars as Academicians V.I.Vernadskiy, V.A.Obruchev, N.I.Andrusov, D.I.Scherbakov.

53 faculty members include the following eight Professors: N.V.Bagrov, Rector of the University, Merited Member of Ukrainian National Education, Academician of the International Academy of Informatisation, Member of the National Committee of Geographers of Ukraine and the Presidium of the Ukrainian Geographic Society, First Chairman of the Supreme Council (Parliament) of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea; V.A. Bokov, Merited Member of Science and Technology of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea (ARC), Winner of the ARC State Prize; A. N. Oliferov, Academic Adviser at the Ukrainian Academy of Technologic Cybernetics; G. I. Shvebs, Winner of the State Prize of Ukraine, Academician of the Ukrainian Academy of Engineering and the European Academy of Sciences;
V. G. Yena, Merited Member of Ukrainian National Education, Winner of the ARC State Prize; Professors N. I. Lysenko, I. Ye. Tymchenko, E .A. Pozacheniuk, and 24 Assistant Professors and Candidates of Sciences.

Structure

Are maintained with the Faculties of Geography at Kyiv, Lvov, Kharkov and Odessa National Universities, Moscow, St.Petersburg and Perm State Universities in Russia, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU) Institute of Geography, the NASU Institute of Marine Hydrophysics, the NASU Institute of Southern Seas Biology and the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) Institute of Geography.

Education

Includes natural resources conservation, landscape studies, karst studies, oceanology, geology, geomorphology, economic, social and recreational geography, history of geography. Students are generally involved in expeditionary research widely practised by the Faculty Departments. The Faculty has its own karst and speleology laboratory. It is directed by the Dean of the Faculty of Geography B.A.Vakhrushev. The South Ukrainian Centre for Caves Cadastre and Inventory is operating as part of the laboratory with the Assistant Professor G.N.Amelichev, Presidium Member of the Ukrainian Speleological Association, as the Centre Director. Students of the Faculty are widely involved in activities of the laboratory and the mountain speleological club.

Areas of Research

Geography. Graduates in geography obtain the qualification of the Specialist/Master of Geography and Teacher. Students study economic and social geography; recreational economy, tourism and excursion business; country studies and international tourist management; ocean geography; sea economy and maritime law; geomorphology; and paleogeography. Specialists in geography work in scientific and industrial institutions dealing with geographic problems, governmental agencies, tourist and excursion bureaus, natural preserves and conservatories, schools and universities.

Ecology and Environmental Protection. Graduates with this speciality acquire the qualification of the Specialist/Master in Ecology. Former students work in the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, environmental inspectorates, environmental prosecution departments, quarantine and customs services, design bureaus, regional and international environmental organizations, educational institutions, etc.
