It was established in 1976 after division of the Department of General
History. Professor S. A. Sekirinskiy was it's first head. Since 1987, it has been
directed by Assistant Professor A. G. Gertsen Professors: G. M. Burov (archaeology,
stone age, copper and bronze age in East Europe) and A. I. Aibabin (ethnic
history of the medieval Crimea, ancient history of Slavs, Byzantine archaeology);
Assistant Professors: A. G. Gertsen (history of primitive society,
ethnology, the Crimean 'cave cities'), V. N. Danilenko (historical chronology,
ancient archaeology), L. S. Moiseenkova (medieval history, culture and
art of West Europe in 5-13 cc.), A. R. Nikiforov (medieval history, the
Crimean cities in 13-16 cc.), E. B. Petrova (ancient history, literary
antiquities as a historical source) and I. N. Khrapunov (archaeology, ethnology,
early iron age); Senior Lecturer V. A. Korostelin (ancient history, Roman
law); Assistant V. E. Naumenko (medieval history, history of
Byzantium). Archaeology, ethnology, ancient
and medieval history, Byzantium studies. The Department offers postgraduate
programs. Archaeology, Byzantium Studies, History of European Cultures. Are maintained
with the NASU Institutes of Archaeology and Oriental Studies, Kiev and Kharkov
National Universities, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Saratov and Ural State Universities,
Vologda and Kursk State Pedagogical Universities, Samara Humanitarian Academy,
Voronezh Centre of Youth Art, the Institute of Russian and Soviet Culture at the
Russian University in Moscow (Institute of European Cultures), Universities of
Glasgow (United Kingdom), Bohum, Mainz, Heidelberg (Germany), Innsbruck (Austria),
Warsaw, Lodz, Lublin (Poland), Cannes University and College de France (France).
